About Janny
Health & Records
Long Back, Short Legs: Like Dachshunds, Basset Hounds are prone to spinal issues like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) due to their long backs.
No Jumping: Avoid letting Janny jump on and off high couches, beds, or in and out of cars. Using pet ramps or lifting her safely is highly recommended to protect her joints.
Weight Management: Extra weight puts massive strain on a Basset's joints and spine. Keeping Janny at a lean, healthy weight through portion control is one of the best things you can do for her long-term health.
3. Skin & Wrinkle Care
Loose Skin Droop: Basset Hounds are famous for their loose skin and wrinkles. Dirt and moisture can get trapped in the folds around her face and legs, leading to skin irritation or infections.
Wiping the Folds: Gently wipe her facial wrinkles with a damp cloth or pet wipe a few times a week, making sure to dry the skin completely afterward.
4. Preventing Bloat (GDV)
Deep-Chested Risk: Basset Hounds are deep-chested dogs, making them susceptible to a sudden, life-threatening condition called Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat).
Prevention Strategies: Feed Janny 2 to 3 smaller meals a day instead of one large one. Avoid heavy exercise or running for at least an hour before and after she eats, and consider using a slow-feeder bowl to prevent her from gulping her food.
5. Routine Vet Care
Vaccines & Preventatives: Just like any dog, Janny needs her core vaccinations (DHPP, Rabies) and consistent monthly preventatives to protect her from fleas, ticks, and heartworms.
Spaying: Discuss the best timing for spaying Janny with your vet. For larger or heavier-boned breeds, veterinarians sometimes recommend waiting until they are a bit older to allow their growth plates to fully close.
